Cruising on the West Coast

  • Don’t be too ambitious in planning a cruise …
especially if young children or novices are aboard. Daily passages of 20 to 25 miles are usually sufficient.
  • Seals, whales, porpoises, dolphins, basking sharks and seabirds of all kinds including gannets …
together with other wildlife are abundant on the West Coast of Scotland and can be seen almost everywhere. Added to which, the occasional submarine may be encountered – just make sure you keep out if its way!
  • Hill walking, fishing and golf are just some of the outdoor activities …
which are second to none in Scotland and can be easily combined with your sailing holiday. The islands of Arran and Skye are well known for walking and climbing, and most anchorages are close to wonderful scenic walks.
  • The Clyde Estuary offers good, safe, sheltered cruising …
for those wishing to enjoy a stress-free holiday with picturesque ports and marinas, pubs, restaurants etc. close at hand, offering snug berths and typical warm west coast hospitality.
  • The waters of the west coast and inner and outer Hebrides (served from our base at Craobh) give access to some of the worlds most beautiful scenery and cruising, limited only by time, weather and your skills and imagination.
  • While this area is not for the beginner, most cruising takes place in the relatively protected waters between the islands and the mainland. The area offers opportunities to both the fair weather sailor and the explorer who enjoys piloting into remote bays and anchorages.
  • North of Oban there are few marinas and you will find yourself anchoring, mooring to buoys or sharing harbour berths with fishing boats, ferries and other yachts, many of whom are willing to offer help and advice to those unfamiliar with the area.
